Think Like a Creative: The Power of Small Steps

Picture this: You're staring at your computer screen, willing your brain to produce something brilliant. Another groundbreaking piece. Another innovative investigation angle. Another flash of genius.

Spoiler alert: That's not how creativity works.

The secret to unlocking your creative potential isn't massive breakthroughs or revolutionary ideas (though they'll come). It's about something much simpler, much more accessible, and – honestly? —much more fun. It's not about having dramatic breakthroughs or revolutionary ideas every day. It's about training your brain to see things differently, one tiny step at a time.

I get it. When you're drowning in deadlines, "being creative" feels like one more thing on your endless to-do list. But here's the thing – creativity isn't another task. It's a way of moving through your day.

Start small. Ridiculously small.

Take a different route to your office. Write your notes in purple ink. Read your draft backwards. Have your coffee outside instead of at your desk. These aren't just random changes – they're micro-disruptions that wake up your brain.

Every time you do something slightly different, you're telling your brain, "Hey, pay attention! This is new!" And that's where the magic happens. Your neural pathways start firing in different ways. Suddenly, that methods section you've been stuck on has a new angle. That literature review starts revealing unexpected connections.

But here's the real secret: these small creative acts are also acts of disruption. Taking time to play with ideas, to experiment, to do things differently – that's coloring outside the box.

I learned this from a colleague who started taking her research notes in sketch form. Just simple doodles and mind maps. Nothing gallery-worthy. But it changed how she thought about her data. She saw patterns she'd missed before. Plus, for the first time in years, she actually enjoyed her note-taking process.

This isn't about adding more to your plate. It's about finding small ways to inject creativity into what you're already doing. Because here's what I know for sure: when we nurture our creativity in small ways, it shows up big in our work.

Your turn. What's one tiny thing you could do differently today? How could you shake up your routine just enough to wake up your creative brain?

Remember: Every creative breakthrough in history started with someone doing something just a little bit differently. Your small steps matter.

Start there. Start small. Start now.

And let me know how it goes – I'd love to hear about your micro-experiments in creativity.

Trace-Making as Creative Practice

This week, as we paused for Labor Day, I found myself reflecting not only on visible and invisible labor but also on the traces our work leaves behind. In Endarkened Narrative work, we use the term...
