10 Tips to Get Discipline in Writing

10 Tips to Get Discipline in Writing

There’s nothing mythical about discipline in writing. Writing discipline is not something that we have or don’t have. Focus in writing is achieved with organization, a sound plan, and a comprehensive writing structure.

To be a professional writer, you must develop a profound discipline in writing as much as possible. Keep in mind that creating great content takes a lot of work, and if you’re not disciplined, you won’t be able to stay on course.

On the other hand, it could be hard to develop your writing discipline. As such, a plan is necessary to enhance it. Here are a couple of tips to get started.

1. Create a Writing Schedule

One of the most foolproof ways of developing your writing discipline is by following a set schedule.

Practice is key to refining your style of writing. Sometimes you may experience writer’s block – where you don’t feel like writing.

Sometimes, creativity isn’t just there. If you didn’t have a set writing schedule before now, you’d probably abandon it for later. However, when you follow a plan, you will ultimately develop a habit of writing.

2. Set Up a Writing Space

Find a suitable space. It could be a corner in your bedroom or a home office. Many writers like getting away from home or patronizing a library or a local coffee shop. Whatever your preference, make it your writing space. Write when you go there.

When you create a dedicated space for writing, the zeal and habit get reinforced. You establish a mental connection to writing the moment you enter that space.

If you’re a fan of drinking something or nibling while writing, ensure you get them ready before starting your writing session. This will allow you to concentrate on the task ahead.

3. Set a Target Wordcount and Follow It

Apart from creating a schedule or setting up a writing space, having a set word count is another way to get discipline in writing. You determine the word count.

For a beginner, it could be 1000 words daily or 2000 for the more experienced writers. It all depends on you. The most important thing is that you fulfil the word count consistently.

4. Sharing Your Commitment Helps

After setting a schedule, share it with your loved ones – your roommates, kids, spouse, etc. Keep them updated with the event. They should understand that you’ll be unavailable. By announcing your commitment to writing, you unwittingly reinforce your dedication and adherence to your schedule.

Perhaps you have a couple of friends who are fond of dropping in without prior notice. Notify them of your schedule and inform them that you will be unavailable.

5. Meditate

Meditation will help enhance your discipline in writing. A lack of focus is one of the most prevalent problems faced by writers. It could stem from an inability to quiet your thoughts and worries. This is where meditation helps. Meditating can calm your thoughts and be present in the moment.

6. Journaling Is Important

Keeping a journal is one of the best ways to practice your writing daily. With a journal, you’ll be able to document your experiences throughout the day. You can also practice your skills in creative writing.

7. Develop a Good Reading Habit

Discipline in writing isn’t all about churning new content daily. A good reader makes a good writer. So, read new content daily.

When you read new content, you’ll restock your writing ideas. In addition, reading helps you see how other writers write and ultimately challenges you to do better.

8. Set Up a blog

The key to staying motivated as a writer is to create a writing blog for yourself.

A blog serves as a platform for you to display your work. It also doubles as a marketing platform for other projects you may be running.

You’ll be compelled to write new content daily when you have a blog. Don’t forget that the more content you create for your blog, the higher your chances of attracting new readers.

9. Join a Writing Club

Writing may be lonely to some extent. Why? Because you’ll do most of it by yourself. But you can make it livelier – by joining a writing club. It could be online or in your neighborhood.

The kind of writing group you join doesn’t matter. What’s more important is the support you’ll gain from the club.

10. Take Breaks

Focusing is essential, but also important is taking breaks during a long writing session. You’re better off with a break every 50 minutes or thereabout. You could do a chore, maybe some push-ups, or even take a walk outside for fresh air. You’ll feel super relaxed and refreshed when you return to your desk.

Takeaway

To develop discipline in writing, you have to create a strategy. The tips mentioned in this article will help enhance your discipline in writing in the long run.
